Guide Book Research

Existing guidebooks already on the market, they all follow this boring layout: portrait layout, large image, title at the top of the page, bright colours.
I think to stand out from the other guidebooks the one I make needs to be the complete opposite of these:

Ideas

- portrait
- simple colours, one bright colour?
- image of art or something other than architecture
- simple, block colour front and bold title?
- simple outside to contrast with inside
- full bleed images on every page inside
- layering of front cover to add some diversity?
- textured paper?
- stab stitch bind adds texture

Krakow- Locals' Guide

I really like the front cover of this book, despite it's simple colour use it is still very bright and eye-catching. It's a much more simplistic and elegant design compared to the other books on the market. However this is let down by the design on the inside which is very boring and doesn't look very professional. This highlights the importance of not just focusing on making a good front cover, the pages on the inside are equally as important.

LOST iN
LOST iN is a guide written from the point of view of a local, they are part of a collection and  each book looks at a different city and they all include interviews from locals who are all from many diverse backgrounds. These interviews provide stories about their experience with the city they live in.

existing books
Below are some of the books Megan has given as inspiration for the book design. They incorporate old and new styles to reflect the history of the city in the modern day. The designs are minimalistic but not too boring, they use colour well and are very eye-catching.
