Leeds VE Day Street Parties

Key points

> Tables laid out across the streets, didn't matter about traffic at the time
> Families and friends celebrating
> Everyone wearing their best clothes
> Everything had been rationed so the opportunity to indulge was a luxury and exciting
> Some children were evacuees from the city and were celebrating being able to go home and be reunited with their families
> Husbands/ fathers/ sons/ brothers would be returning home
> Bonfires were often created to celebrate the end of the blackout
> Union Jack flags and bunting was put out to celebrate
>  The celebrations were mainly for the children and involved many games
> Music was played from people bringing their record players, gramophones and pianos outside into the streets

after a 6 year long war people now had freedom

14th may 1945
went down The Headrow and Albion Street, over 2,000 members of  the auxiliary units took part. It rained but this didn't put people off, crowds gathered to watch and celebrate.
