Research into WWII
To get some idea of how things were during the war and what was actually being celebrated during the victory parade I went to the library and took out some books to help me develop my knowledge. I found a lot of books containing images of both the victory parades and street parties which were very happy and nice to look at. However there was also the harsh reality documented and many of the images were of the liberations of the concentration camps that many people were not previously aware of. It was also a time of great sorrow as despite the war being over, many of the families celebrating would be missing loved ones who had died during the war. Due to these facts I want my poster to remain sensitive and acknowledge both a sense of loss but also respect to the soldiers who died during the war.
However my main focus will be the fact that the end of the war was a massive celebration as it meant an end to innocent lives being lost and an end to the destruction caused by bombs and air raids.
Overall I found looking at the books very eye opening as it reminded me of the history lessons I had in school about how awful the war really was. This helped me imagine the relief felt by the people celebrating in the victory parade.
