Research about Leeds

History of Leeds
1086> Small village belonging to the Norman baron Ilbert de Lacy of Pontefract castle

1152> Kirkstall Abbey founded by Henry Lacy, owned around 5,000 sheep which helped develop industries such as a wool making

1201> 'simon the Dyer' accused of selling adulterated wine

1275> One of the earliest references to cloth making

1560> Leeds began to show signs of major growth. The streets of Kirkgate and Brigatte already existed as well as the lane we now know as the Headrow.

1600> Population was only 4,000 people

1661> First Mayor appointed

1724> Daniel Defoe visited Leeds and described the town's cloth market as a prodigy of its kind, unequalled in the world.

1730> Described as one of the larges and most flourishing towns in the country

1771> Population of 16,300

1790- 1800> Bean Ing Mills was the first factory in Leeds to open, was used for the production of superfine cloth. The outputs greater than anything before and soon supplied the British and Swedish Army

From this my 3 ideas were to look at:
Kirkgate and the sheep that used to be there as well as the events that take place there
To look into the mills in leeds that still exist
To look into war related things such as events that happened after the war.
