Penguin Typeface

The first 10 Penguin books

  1. Ariel - Andre Maurois
  2. A Farewell to Arms - Ernest Hemingway
  3. Poet's Pub - Eric Linklater
  4. Madame Claire - Susan Ertz
  5. The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club - Dorothy L. Sayers
  6. The Mysterious Affair at Styles - Agatha Christie
  7. Twenty-Five - John Beverly Nichols
  8. William - E.H.Young
  9. Gone to Earth - Mary Webb
  10. Carnival - Compton Mackenzie
The colours used to indicate subject matter – initially just orange for fiction, green for crime, dark blue for biography, cerise for travel & adventure, red for plays..

After doing some research into the typeface originally used for the penguin books I found out that Gill Sans was the main one used therefore I have decided to use this typeface in my designs as I want to pay respect to the history of penguin books.
