The first Idea I had was in relation so Auggie's helmet. He uses this as protection from the world, he doesn't like people looking at his face therefore hides behind the helmet. I thought about how he'd often like to be transported to another world when he's wearing this helmet, somewhere that would accept him for who he is and see him as normal.
I had a similar idea when drawing this, I thought about how Auggie felt different to the other children and was often in a world of his own daydreaming. Auggie desperately wants to be an astronaut and to visit space.
This idea comes from the frequent mention of the universe throughout the book. When the book is written from Via's POV she talks about how her family is the universe and the universe revolves around their 'sun' (son) Auggie. When the book is written from Justin's POV he also brings up the theme of the universe and comments on how the universe has been kind to Auggie and blessed him with such a loving family. The universe symbolises that there is a bigger power than us that dictates the way the world works.
this illustration shows Auggie jumping in space, being care free and enjoying himself.
