A shako is a tall military cap, it usually has a badge/ some sort of design on the front which is usually metallic. There is also usually a feather or something on the top of it. The shako became popular in the 1800's and derives from Hungary. It became a common military headdress worn by most of the regiments of the European and American armies. It replaced the former 'bicorne' and people much preferred this as it was made of heavy felt and leather therefore retained its shape and also offered some protection for soldiers as well as shading their eyes. It was popular until the mid-19th century when it was taken over by spiked helmets. Although it had many benefits, the shako didn't offer any protection against rain and snow as most models were made of cloth/ felt.
