90's trends

When thinking about the target audience I thought about what would appeal to them in terms of trends/ capturing their attention. As the age range is 18-22 this means they were born from 1996-2000 therefore grew up in the early 2000/ back end of the 90s. I wanted to look into trends which were about around that time as I thought this would be nostalgic for the freshers to look back on. It will potentially remind them of a time they spent with family growing up and shows they loved as a child. I thought this was a nice touch considering a lot of students will be away from home therefore a bit of familiarity will be comforting to them.

The 90’s/ early 00's in all its glory was truly a unique period in my childhood. It was a magnificent time of Zubaz pants, Rugrats, the Olsen twins, and the symphonic sound of AOL booting up. Today, we take a special journey back in time and look back at some of the amazing design trends that encapsulate the 90’s.

Loud colour and pattern use

Is it just me, or did pretty much every design in the 90’s include bright neon colors, shapes, squiggles, and jagged edges? Let’s face it, we saw it EVERYWHERE: Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Rugrats, TV Commercials, clothing, Mall Advertisements, Food Courts, food packaging, websites, print ads, and MORE! It just wasn’t trending if the colors didn’t burn your retinas and looked like it was covered in confetti.

Rugrats

An iconic cartoon from the 90's is rugrats, a show that ran from 1991-2004 therefore the target audience will know and potentially love it. The colours and pattern used are very vibrant and stereotypical of the 90's therefore is perfect to use as inspiration for my design work.

I decided to use this imagery to create a colour scheme as I thought the colours used would be perfect to aim at both male and female students. I really like the colour pallet I have created and I think it will suit the art fund's current aesthetic therefore won't look too out of place but it will bring a new energy to their branding.
