Five places to check out with a Student Art Pass

If you’re the proud new holder of a Student Art Pass, you’ll be plotting what to do with it – so we’ve chosen five great spots near some of the UK’s most exciting university cities to visit.

Looking for inspiration between lectures? Want to take your mates somewhere different, or just need a bit of headspace? 

A Student Art Pass gets you free entry to more than 240 museums, galleries and historic houses across the UK, as well as 50% off major exhibitions. Amazing, right? 

In fact, there’s so much to see that it can be hard to choose where to go – so we’ve selected five great places where you can spark ideas, make discoveries or just relax and escape the city for a while. Even better, with each visit you're saving £5 or more – so you've made the cost of your pass back straight away.

Dunham Massey

If you’re studying in Manchester and in need of a breath of fresh air, nearby Dunham Massey is a popular getaway spot, not least for the deer that roam freely around the parkland. It’s just a short jaunt away from Altrincham (easily accessible by tram) and ideal for taking visiting friends or family, especially around Christmas when the grounds come to life with lights and events.

Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts

Home to the University of East Anglia’s Abstract and Constructivist collection, this exciting modern space is a font of inspiration for those interested in design and architecture. See works from the likes of Wassily Kandinsky, Hans Arp and Sonia Delaunay, and check out an imaginative programme of temporary exhibitions – recent shows have looked at the radical graphics of the Russian Revolution and 20th-century Japanese photography.

The Royal Pavilion

• East Sussex

A wander around this slightly surreal seaside palace is a rite of passage for anyone new to Brighton, and your Student Art Pass will get you in for free. You can trace the footsteps of Rossini, who performed in the opulent Music Room in 1823, and take plenty of decor inspo from the Royal Bedrooms for your own.

Shakespeare's Family Homes

• Warwickshire
• Free entry with National Art Pass

Literary types can use their Student Art Pass to explore Shakespeare’s Family Homes and garner some writing inspiration from the Bard. Dotted around Stratford-upon-Avon (only around 40 minutes on the train away from Birmingham and Warwick), the houses offer insight into several chapters of the playwright’s life – and you could even combine your trip with a visit to the RSC.

York Art Gallery

As well as a programme of changing exhibitions – recent shows have included Picasso’s ceramics and the uncanny landscapes of Paul Nash – York Art Gallery is home to the Centre of Ceramic Art, one of the largest collections of ceramics in the UK and situated in two tranquil gallery spaces perfect for reflection between classes (before fuelling back up on coffee in the gallery cafe, of course).
