Moral principles that govern a persons behaviour.
A branch of knowledge concerned with moral principles.
Every decision we have as a designer has an ethical dimension requiring us all the 'balance the forces' in our own small way as responsible individuals.
Discussion:
Q1: Do you think ethics is important in G.D? Why?
Q2: What defines being "good" in G.D?
Q3: What does ethical practice entail in G.D? - What Principles?
Q1: Yes for the purpose of the design and what it is communicating. Persuading people to buy things or do certain things in a specific way. There's not really any excuse for not being ethical in this day and age.
It is important dependant on the brief, would you work for someone who doesn't have the same morals as you?
Q2: Designing with consideration and for a cause. It doesn't always have to benefit you as an individual it can benefit someone else.
Q3: Being considerate throughout your design process.
Steven Heller (2003)
"Good design is good citizenship "
"A designer must be professionally culturally and socially responsible for the impact of his or her design has on the citizenry."
Katherine McCoy (2003)
Believes that G.D's don't think about ethics because it isn't important to the visuals of G.D
Believes that in the learning stage G.D's need to learn about the importance of ethics.
Lucian Roberts (2007)
We shouldn't put ourself in the position where we have to make other peoples decisions for them.
Jacqueline Roach
Rather than walk away from a job isn't it better to question whether you can add your own influence to the work in some way and make change.
A.C Grayling
Every aspect of our lives is touched by considerations of the quality of our experience. There is a deep connection between the aesthetic and the ethical.
Aesthetics is really important because it gives us something to embrace, work that we think it beautiful and by doing that we are putting this work out there for other people to enjoy.
Richard Holloway
Good art is also good for other things, so good design will please your client and may help a product sell better as well as improving lives as it is lovely in its own right.
THEMES:
- Being a good citizen
- Who to work for
- Influence and persuasion
- Aesthetic and ethics
- Value and purpose
GROUP WORK - reviewing quotes:
On being citizens - not necessarily your own ideas/ voice being put forward, your work is based on the opinions and views of the company you are designing for.
On who to work for - dependant on their views in relation to your own, if you dont agree with them why work for them?
On having an influence - Not just disregarding a company instantly because they have different views to you, trying to talk to them and understanding why they view things the way they do and then potentially influencing them to change their mind.
On self and aesthetics - Doing work that makes you happy, pretty work makes people happy which improves quality of life.
On value - If something has being designed well then it makes your client happy, it then helps products sell better as well as improving quality of life. Also justifying pretty design by saying it will help the product sell therefore makes the client, consumer and yourself happy.
INDIVIDUALLY- Ideas to take forward:
To not just disregard working for a company because of their views being different to my own, I will try influence them to view things from a different point of view and potentially make them more open to my own views. I believe that if you just instantly say no to a client because you don't agree with their views you are not achieving anything, they will find someone else to do the work but saying something to them and trying to be influential is more beneficial.
To only work for people who share the same or similar views as I do and to have the strength to say no to work when I disagree with a company and can't do anything to influence the work to be more my own.
AIGA The designers responsibility to audience members and users
- Main concern is to create helpful design for the audience.
- Designers must recognise that their work contributes to the wellbeing of the general public, particularly in regard to health and safety.
"Sustainability"
Social sustainability (people and societies)
Economic Sustainability (capital and growth)
Environmental sustainability (the planet)
social equity + economic prosperity + environmental stewardship
bearable + equitable + viable
Q1: How does sustainability relate to ethics?
Ethics influences the sustainability of a project
It has value as it is doing good outside of the design, it is relating to the impact on the environment, on society and economy.
Sustainability is more specific to a project where as ethics is always the same
Eric Benson (in Sherin 2008)
In the beginning, questions to ask yourself:
- Is this the best method to communicate the message?
- Whats the impact of making this piece?
- How can we lessen the impact if we produce the work?
Initial discussions- middle:
- Respect and care for the community
- Improve the quality of life
- Conserve earth's vitality and diversity
- Minimise the depletion of nonrenewable resources
- Change personal attitudes and practices to keep with the planet's carrying capacity
Conscious design decisions:
- Design for re-use/ longevity
- Design cyclically, not linearly
- Choose recycles/ nontoxic materials
- Minimise waste
- Minimse ink coverage
- Choose vendors that use renewable energy and employ socially equitable and environmentally friendly business practices
- Educate consumers about the lifecycle issues through messaging/ markets
- Encourage others to design sustainably
Q2: How practical and achievable do you think this is?
It is all dependant on the budget and how easy it is to source the things you require to be sustainable.
Examples of sustainable design:
Creative concern, e.g- fostering campaign
Footprint
Cast iron design
Re-nourish
Barnbrook Studio, e.g- Occupy London
Stonewall, e.g- some people are gay
Ernst Bettler, e.g- NAZI to shame the company that supplied the Nazi's with drugs and chemicals in WW2 which was used in the concentration camps
